MS. S-M'S...
STEPPING UP TO BE GLOBAL CITIZENS INQUIRY PROJECT...
As we learn more about being global citizens, we are going to look at completing an inquiry based project where you will have a chance to research an issue that intrigues you. This issue may relate to the environment, child labour, women's rights, rights of the child, hunger, poverty, right to education, labour issues throughout the world, child soldiers, child poverty... There are many issues, the only requirement is that is must relate to the topic of Global Citizenship and must promote activism and awareness. What would you like to research?? Start thinking about it. We will start this project ....
For ideas... I have many sites displayed below as well as videos to get you thinking. Start talking about what you would like to research... start researching... start thinking... You goal will be to make a difference by creating awareness and getting others thinking...

GO TO THE UNITED NATIONS "CYBERSCHOOLBUS" WEBSITE AND WEBQUEST ON CHILD LABOUR

Around the world today, children are not only the victims of war, but also the participants. At any one time, more than 250,000 girls and boys under the age of 18 are fighting in armed conflicts. These young soldiers are part of government forces and armed opposition groups in more than 30 locations worldwide. And while many child soldiers are between the ages of 15 and 18, some are as young as 7 years old.

Throughout this WebQuest you will find all the resources you need to develop a response to a fundamental question:

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT CHILD SOLDIERS??
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT CHILD POVERTY?
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT DISCRIMINATION?
WHAT SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT.... WHAT'S YOUR ISSUE THAT YOU WANT TO STAND UP FOR??

Short videos that relate to our topic, to get you thinking...

Martin Luther King Memorial

The following is an article taken from this site:
http://www.weeklyreader.com/node/1993

A towering new memorial was unveiled on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. this week. It honors the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929–1968) as a man of peace.
King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in the nation’s capital on August 28, 1963. On that day, more than 100,000 people had come to Washington in support of civil rights.

“A Stone of Hope”
The 30-foot-tall sculpture was crafted by Chinese artist Lei Yixin. It was inspired by a line from King's famous oration at the Lincoln Memorial: “Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”
The civil rights leader is depicted with his arms crossed, looking toward the horizon. He is the “stone of hope” emerging from a boulder — a “mountain of despair.”

A Historic First
King is the first person of color to have a memorial on the National Mall. The monument is surrounded by memorials to U.S. presidents — Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
"It's nicely situated between the Jefferson and the Lincoln Memorial, so it's part of that conversation," said Ed Jackson, the architect who designed the King memorial. "That corner of the mall has started to have a little bit of a theme about the ideas of our democracy between Jefferson, (Franklin D.) Roosevelt and now King."
Visitors to the site agree. “I think it's appropriate,” said Frank Myers, 49, of King George, Va. “His contribution was just as great as any of the presidents. This country's come a long way as a result of him and people like him.”
